What the terms mean

Pick one frequent call type with maintained knowledge, clear permissions, a measurable completion state, and a safe human fallback. Exclude high-risk edge cases until the controls are proven.

Evidence
A primary document, observed pilot result, or contract term that supports a claim.
Production path
The complete route from caller and carrier through models, tools, transfer, logs, and human follow-up.

Planning conditions

Choose one bounded job

Pick one frequent call type with maintained knowledge, clear permissions, a measurable completion state, and a safe human fallback. Exclude high-risk edge cases until the controls are proven.

Build scenarios from real calls, including missing information, contradictory callers, background noise, corrections, and unavailable systems.

Score outcomes, not impressions

Track task completion, factual accuracy, tool-write accuracy, transfer success, interruption recovery, latency, caller effort, and unsafe or misleading behavior.

Require recordings or traces, structured results, reviewer notes, and a reproducible configuration for every scored call.

Voice agent human handoff: five acceptance tests

Run these tests with the receiving human queue open. A transfer announcement does not prove a person received usable context.

  1. Normal transfer: Verify the transcript, caller identity, attempted actions, error state, and escalation reason reach the receiving workflow.
  2. Unavailable humans: Test outside working hours and confirm the caller gets an accurate next step and the interaction is retained.
  3. Routing: Test language, priority, and account rules; confirm the call reaches the intended team with an owner.
  4. Failed transfer: Interrupt the integration and verify a visible failure, recoverable record, and no duplicate action after retry.
  5. Re-entry: After the human replies, verify conversation ownership and whether the agent sees the updated state.

Record the expected and observed result, handoff link, timestamp, and owner for every test.

Take this to every provider

Your evaluation checklist

  1. Define one call job and fallback
  2. Create 20 or more representative scenarios
  3. Test noise, interruption, silence, and corrections
  4. Verify tool writes and transfer context
  5. Keep recordings, traces, and reviewer notes
  6. Write rollout and rollback thresholds

Use the decision tool above and the full pilot worksheet to record results against each shortlisted provider: Shortlist workspace.

Before you decide

Questions buyers ask

How many calls should a voice-agent pilot include?

Use enough calls to cover each important scenario repeatedly, not an arbitrary vanity total. A practical start is at least 20 distinct scenarios with repetitions across callers, noise, accents, and system conditions.

What is a failed call?

Define failure before testing: wrong answer, wrong action, missed consent, broken transfer, excessive latency, lost caller context, unsafe behavior, or an unresolved call that the system labels successful.

Evaluate language support in real calls

Test recognition, speech quality, interruptions, language switching, tool use, and human transfer with your own calls in the required language. Availability can vary by model, plan, and phone route.
